Upcoming Infrastructure Projects Around Velachery

Velachery already has MRTS, major roads and access to OMR. The next stage of development is focused on easing road traffic and improving last-mile travel.

The most important projects include a new elevated road, Metro stations, better walking routes and drainage work. Each project solves a different local problem.

A new flyover is planned between the Sardar Patel Road–Velachery Main Road junction and Guru Nanak College on 200 Feet Road. The main structure will cover about 3 km and cross busy points near Race Course Road, Five Furlong Road and Velachery Bypass.

The official GCC tender value is ₹231.86 crore, with a construction period of 900 days. The wider announced cost has been reported at around ₹310 crore after including related works. The flyover will have service roads, pedestrian paths and separate ramps towards Five Furlong Road and Guru Nanak College.

The project is expected to reduce waiting time near Phoenix Marketcity and the Velachery–Guindy road. It can also improve access towards Guindy railway station, GST Road and the airport.

Construction may cause traffic diversions before the long-term benefit is seen. Buyers and office workers should expect temporary delays during the work period.

Chennai Metro Phase 2 Corridor 5 runs from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. The full corridor covers about 47 km and forms part of the city’s 118.9 km Phase 2 network.

Stations planned near Velachery include Adambakkam, Vanuvampet and Puzhuthivakkam. Madipakkam and Medavakkam Main Road are also part of the wider route towards Sholinganallur.

This line will give Velachery residents another rail option apart from MRTS. It can improve travel towards Alandur, Anna Nagar, Porur and Sholinganallur.

The Metro will be most useful for homes with easy road access to the new stations. A project may be close on a map but still take longer to reach through narrow roads.

Greater Chennai Corporation has planned a 3.2 km pedestrian plaza between Velachery MRTS and Taramani MRTS stations. The project follows Perungudi MRTS Station Road and is valued at ₹14.44 crore.

The tender gives a work period of 365 days. The plan includes continuous walking space, better access for people with disabilities, seating, landscaping and safer links to the MRTS stations.

This project can improve the last part of the daily journey for people working in Taramani and Perungudi. It may also reduce unsafe walking along roads with fast traffic and parked vehicles.

The main challenge will be keeping the path clear of parking, waste and shop encroachments after completion.

MRTS services were extended from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount on 14 March 2026. Trains now stop at Puzhuthivakkam and connect with Metro and suburban rail at St. Thomas Mount.

Adambakkam station was built as part of the same extension. However, trains did not begin stopping there when the line opened. Southern Railway said the halt would be added later and that a separate date would be announced.

Once operational, Adambakkam station will give another rail option to people living west of Velachery. It will also reduce dependence on St. Thomas Mount and Puzhuthivakkam for nearby residents.

The Velachery–St. Thomas Mount link itself is already open. Only the Adambakkam stop should be treated as upcoming.

A foot-over bridge has been proposed near Nalli Silks on Velachery Main Road. The project was approved at an estimated cost of ₹14 crore.

The bridge is planned on a busy stretch used by people travelling towards Velachery MRTS. The work was delayed because tender bids were higher than the approved estimate. The latest available project update said construction could take about 14 months after final approval.

The foot-over bridge can provide a safer crossing on Velachery Main Road. It will be useful only when the access points, lifts or ramps and nearby footpaths are maintained well.

Flood-control work remains one of the most important infrastructure needs in Velachery. Local stormwater drain construction was active at Jeevarathnam Nagar in 2026, though officials ordered the contractor to correct quality problems found during an inspection. [7]

A separate plan is being considered for a new culvert on the MRTS–Perungudi Link Road. This route carries rainwater from Velachery, Perungudi and Taramani towards Pallikaranai marsh. The plan involves several departments and was still pending in the latest available update.

These works may not change travel time, but they can have a direct effect on homes, basement parking and road access during heavy rain. For property buyers, drainage work can be as important as a new Metro or flyover.

Prestige Parkstreet can benefit from several transport routes instead of depending on one road. The new flyover may improve access towards Guindy. Metro Corridor 5 can add stations west and south of Velachery. The MRTS already links the area with Taramani, Perungudi, St. Thomas Mount and central Chennai.

The pedestrian plaza can improve access towards the Taramani office belt. Drain and culvert projects can support better flood management around low-lying roads.

These projects may support buyer and rental demand. They do not guarantee a rise in apartment prices. The final value of Prestige Parkstreet will also depend on its launch price, RERA approval, apartment sizes, construction progress and exact site access.

Buyers should check whether a project is under construction, approved, tendered or only proposed. These terms have different meanings.

They should also measure the real distance from the property to each station or road project. Travel time during office hours is more useful than straight-line map distance.

For road projects, buyers should consider the construction period and traffic diversions. For drainage work, they should inspect the site after heavy rain and check the basement level.

Infrastructure can improve a location. It cannot correct a poor project plan, an excessive launch price or weak legal approvals.
